On 24 January 2018, CELL ran a workshop session entitled "Divisive Stereotypes and Discrimination Within and Beyond the Classroom: The Context of Refugee and Migrant Students." The session was part of the Helping Students in Acceptance (HESTIA) workshop in Maastricht, The Netherlands, which brought together 15 teachers from Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and the United Kingdom.
CELL's session examined what is divisive content from a diverse disciplinary and country perspective, presented research on divisive stereotypes and prejudice aimed at refugees and migrants, and explored the potential impact of such stereotypes. The session also faciliated a discussion among teachers about their experiences with divisive stereotypes and prejudice in textbooks, other types of educational media, and classroom discussions, and explored different strategies when encountering divisive content.
The workshop was supported by Erasmus+ and hosted and organized by UNU-MERIT and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance at Maastricht University.
